FREEDOM RENTALS - Kayak & Equipment Hire

Our Freedom Rentals hire service enables you to design your own self-guided tours, or perhaps you need just a few kayaks as part of a fun day out on the coast.

Venues:

Ngunguru:

The sheltered waters of Ngunguru Harbour and the historic Ngunguru River provide a range of options ideal for beginners, family and social groups. Explore the huge mangrove ecosystems or the iconic Ngunguru Sandspit, the history of Ngunguru River, or find your own beach for a great day out.

Matapouri:

The white sands and lush forest backdrop at Matapouri estuary offers another picture-perfect kayaking setting when the tide is high. The mangrove ecosystem at Matapouri is one of the least polluted in the country, and the water temperatures on the incoming tide always a degree or two better than elsewhere; offering the most sheltered venue for swimming & snorkeling on the coast.

Tutukaka:

Tutukaka harbour offers a more rugged setting for self-guided groups, whilst still retaining some shelter from wind and swell.

Hire groups will find great snorkeling, fishing and picnic spots on both sides of the harbour, and the kayaking is great at any time of the tide. The short walk up to Tutukaka lighthouse is a must enroute, and is easily accessed from the twin coves at the base of Tutukaka Headland.

Whangarei Harbour:

From Onerahi to Urquharts Bay there is a diverse range of paddling options. These include mangrove forests, marine reserves, islands and historical sites. Launching spots include Onerahi, Waikaraka, Tamaterau, Parua Bay, McLeods Bay, Taurikura and Urquharts Bay.

Pataua / Taiharuru Coastal Areas:

Large estuaries at Pataua and Taiharuru flow out into some of Northland's finest coastline. Sandy bays, rocky headlands, reefs and channels abound. Great snorkelling and fishing opportunities.

Other Venues, School Camps & Industry Groups:

For experienced kayakers and groups requiring equipment for their own instructors, there are infinite options for kayaking on the Pacific Coast, southern Bay of Islands, or one of the many Northland harbours. Contact us for details.

For all Freedom Rentals:

It is essential that all persons in a self-guided group be water confident, with good outdoor skills, and that at least one person is experienced in managing risks at sea, and decision-making in dangerous sea conditions which can, and do, develop quickly!

Important Information:

- SAFETY IS ALWAYS A PRIORITY -

As with all outdoor and water activities, kayaking has inherent risks. People renting kayaks should be reasonably fit, familiar with the outdoors, and their planned journey. Every group must be led by an experienced outdoors person who is able to manage risks and emergency situations at sea. If you are an inexperienced group or have little knowledge of the area, consider hiring a guide for part or all of your trip.

Safe travels!
We look forward to being of service.
