This trip starts at Matauri Bay Holiday Park where we leave our vehicles before heading out from the beach to Motukawanui Island. Usually we will be based there staying at the DOC hut.

This is the only accommodation on the Cavalli Islands.

No need to bring your tent or mattress but we need to book well ahead especially in the Summer months. It's worth it as you will be able to hear kiwi at nights in this pest free environment and feed the stingray off the beach as you clean your fish!!

In busy periods there are other places to stay on the mainland (Matauri Bay, Mahineapua) It is possible to circumnavigate and explore the islands in a series of day trips based at Matauri Bay if the group is pressed for time. The best base for this would be at the Matauri Bay Holiday Park.

From Motukawanui we explore the iconic Cavalli Islands Conservation Reserve, home of the 'Rainbow Warrior' wreck, awesome scenery and abundant marine life. This cluster of islands lie to the east of an extremely rugged and beautiful section of the Northland Coast. The northern islands are very secluded and offer great snorkeling. Caves and tunnels to the east can be explored in settled conditions.
